The Yuquot Whalers' Shrine
Aldona Jonaitis
ART & ARCHITECTURE
1999
HARD COVER
A fascinating, scholarly study of the history and meaning of a striking assemblage of materials removed from Yuquot Cove on the west coast of Vancouver Island to the American Museum by George Hunt in 1905. The remarkable Mowachaht shrine, which had been acquired and admired by the influential Franz Boas, consists of 92 carved wooden figures and whales, 16 human skulls, and the small building that had sheltered the shrine since perhaps the 17th century. Jonaitis presents the correspondence with Boas, archival photographs, and research, including the controversy whether to repatriate the shrine for display in Yuquot.
