The Last Princess, The Story of Princess Ka'iulani of Hawaii  •  Fay Stanley  •  Diane Stanley
BIOGRAPHY/MEMOIR •  1991 •  HARD COVER  • 40 PAGES • MIDDLE READERS (Age 9-12)
Ka'iulani was raised to rule, but she never got the chance. Instead, her island nation was annexed by the United States government, in spite of President Grover Cleveland's promise to respect Hawaii's sovereignty. (He must have crossed his fingers.) This is a beautifully illustrated, beautifully told, rather sad story -- a good introduction to native Hawaii for readers ages 7 to 11. (HWI78, $17.99)
