COPPER CANYON
Worth Looking For
History of Copper Canyon and the Tarahumara Indians
Carl Lumholtz
Grant Shepherd
EXPLORATION
2000
PAPER
107 PAGES
COMING IN
Two books come up over and over in discussions of the Copper Canyon and Sierra Madre: Carl Lumholtz's account of exploring in the region in the 1890s, "Unknown Mexico," and "Silver Magnet," the long-out-of-print memoir of life at Hacienda San Miguel in Batopilas by Grant Shepherd, whose family founded the Batopilas Mining Company. Richard Fisher has returned both to print in this anthology, which also includes modern color photographs, a simple map of the region and some travel essentials. The 8 1/2 x 11 may not be the best format for a classic travelogue but the contents (and wonderful color photographs) makes this book essential for travelers to the region.
