Captivated by an old field recording of a singer from the somewhat remote Bahamian island of Andros, blues and jazz scholar Samuel Barclay Charters and his soon-to-be wife Ann Danberg took a trip to the island in 1958, and rented a small house. During their time on the island, they discovered Fredrick McQueen and Joseph Spence, two locals with immense musical talent, and recorded these men (along with others) in performance. Part travelogue and part enthomusicology, this book is a wonderful treatment of the Bahamas and its musical traditions. Dispersed throughout the text are black-and-white photographs taken at that time.  (CRB68, $14.95)
