In Morocco
Edith Wharton
TRAVEL NARRATIVE •  2010 •  PAPER  • 223 PAGES

A very enjoyable account of Edith Wharton's month-long journey through Morocco just after World War I. Though it feels dated in that she was in thrall to the French (the famed resident-general Lyautey was her guide), what's remarkable is just how contemporary her descriptions feel. She captures the landscapes, architecture and many aspects of Muslim culture and history, and especially the cities of Rabat, Fez, and Marrakech.  (MRC02, $10.95)
