Originally published in 1916, this wonderful story is about a 9-year-old orphaned girl who goes to live with her cousins on a Vermont farm. In learning such earthy tasks as how to churn butter, she gains confidence and a sense of self. Fisher does a wonderful job of capturing the conflicts and emotions of childhood. While the novel will appeal particularly to young girls, we must admit it was a childhood favorite -- when we were young boys. Ages 9-12.
