A collection of black-and-white photographs and stories collected by Curtis. A member of the 1899 Harriman Expedition, he went on to spend 30 years among the Aleut and other peoples of the Bering Strait. Shannon Lowry, who provides an introduction to modern anthropological research in the region, puts the photographs in a historical context. Chapters are devoted to the people of Nunivak Island, King Island, the Diomede Islands and Kingigan (today called Wales).  (ALA145, $29.95)
