The first of Maupin's six "Tales of the City" novels -- which began life as a newspaper serial and ultimately inspired a hit television series -- chronicles the lives of the residents of one fictitious apartment house in 1970s San Francisco. An observant portrait of an era, this comedy of manners is an excellent entertainment.  (SFO05, $14.00)
