A contemporaneous account of the conquest and heritage of Peru from an Inca perspective, written in the 1550s. Although he was a Spaniard, De Betanzos was married to an Inca princess and recorded the oral traditions and history of her aristocratic family. For 400 years, only 18 chapters of this work were known -- the remaining 64 were not discovered until the 1980s. The language can be hardgoing.  (AND39, $21.95)
