A nicely paced tale of the missing Scottish explorer and Stanley's headline-grabbing efforts to locate him. Though the story is well known, Dugard (who has also written about Captain James Cook) has done his homework well, drawing together research, diary extracts and contemporary accounts into a nuanced, lively portrait of the two men and their time.  (AFR130, $15.95)
