The previously unpublished journal of meteorologist and Arctic explorer Evelyn Briggs Baldwin (1862-1933), as edited by polar historian Capelotti. Baldwin was second in command on the first American expedition to the region, lead by journalist and polar enthusiast William Wellman (an advocate of air balloons). Baldwin returned to Franz Josef Land as leader of the Baldwin-Ziegler expedition (1901-02).
