Rebellion in the Backlands
by Euclides da Cunha Samuel Putnam (Translator)
- LITERATURE
- 1985
- PAPER
- 556 PAGES
This epic tale of the Canudos Rebellion in northeastern Brazil (and its brutal suppression), originally published in 1902 -- and a touchstone of Brazilian literature. It's a sprawling book, part military history, part meditation on the Brazilian national character and a hallucinatory portrait of Antonio Conselheiro, the charismatic leader of the 1893-1897 rebellion. Published in Portuguese as Os Sertoes (more literally the arid region). Da Cunha (1866-1909) was a journalist covering the war.
