A set of personal sketches describing a year (1888-1889) of travels in the Marquesas, Paumotus and the Gilberts, first written as magazine articles and then reworked to incorporate detail on local peoples and history, published posthumously. Stevenson was entranced by his experiences in the Pacific, and decided never to leave. He died in Samoa in 1894.
