This historical novel, originally published in 1945, traces the Ottoman period in the Central Balkans from the 16th-century to World War I. Andric takes as his metaphor the location of the ancient bridge on the Drina, dividing East and West, Europe and Orient, Christian and Muslim. Born in Travnik, Bosnia, Andric won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. The Bridge on the Drina is part of a trilogy that includes Bosnian Story and The Woman from Sarajevo.  (BLK59, $15.00)
