Dynamo, Triumph and Tragedy in Nazi-Occupied Kiev

Dynamo, Triumph and Tragedy in Nazi-Occupied Kiev

When Hitler's forces surrounded, invaded, and ravaged Kiev in 1941, among the city's many captured defenders were members of the 1939 Dynamo Kiev football team -- the best team in Europe before the war. But the athletes continued to play in captivity, and the German authorities organized a match against the Luftwaffe. The half-starved Ukranians lost the match (it was refereed by an S.S. officer), but the game survived in Ukranian history as a poignant allegory of resistence.  (RUS326, $14.95)
