![]() Dynamo, Triumph and Tragedy in Nazi-Occupied Kiev Andy Dougan HISTORY 2004 PAPER 256 PAGES
When Hitler's forces surrounded, invaded, and ravaged Kiev in 1941, among the city's many captured defenders were members of the 1939 Dynamo Kiev football team -- the best team in Europe before the war. But the athletes continued to play in captivity, and the German authorities organized a match against the Luftwaffe. The half-starved Ukranians lost the match (it was refereed by an S.S. officer), but the game survived in Ukranian history as a poignant allegory of resistence.
