In the 1960s, Barnet, an ethnographer by training, spent hundreds of hours interviewing 104-year-old Esteban Montejo about his experiences as an fugitive slave, his work in the cane fields, the 1898 war with the Spaniards, the subsequent arrival of the Americans and his reflections on the early years of the revolution. A first person narrative, this is the work that, more than any other, helped to invent the genre of the Novela Testimonio.  (CBA13, $14.95)
